Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, and Ikhfa — the 4 rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween.

Izhar (Clear Pronunciation)

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by one of the 6 throat letters, it is pronounced clearly without any nasalization.

ء ه ع ح غ خ

مَنْ آمَنَman aamana

Idgham (Merging)

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by one of the letters of 'يرملون' (yarmaloon), the noon sound merges into the next letter. It merges with nasalization (ghunnah) before ي ن م و, and without it before ر ل.

ي ر م ل و ن

مَنْ يَقُولُmay-yaqooluwith ghunnah

Iqlab (Conversion)

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by ب, the noon sound is converted into a light meem sound with nasalization.

ب

مِنْ بَعْدِmim-ba'dinoon sound becomes meem

Ikhfa (Hidden Nasalization)

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by any of the remaining 15 letters, the noon sound is hidden — pronounced neither fully clear nor fully merged — with nasalization.
