Juz and para: frequently asked questions

What is a juz in the Quran?

A juz (plural ajza) is one of 30 roughly equal parts of the Quran. The division makes it easy to read the whole Quran in a month — one juz a day, which is how many Muslims complete it in Ramadan.

What is the difference between a juz and a para?

There is none. Juz is the Arabic word; para (or sipara) is the name used in Urdu, Hindi and much of South Asia. Both mean one of the 30 parts of the Quran.

Is a juz the same as a surah?

No. A surah is a chapter with its own name and theme — there are 114. A juz is a reading portion of equal length — there are 30. A juz can hold part of one long surah (Juz 2 is entirely inside Al-Baqarah) or many short surahs (Juz 30 has 37).

Why are the juz named the way they are?

Each juz is usually known by its opening words, such as “Alif Lam Meem” for Juz 1 or “Amma” for Juz 30. Indo-Pak and Madani mushafs place a few boundaries a verse or so apart, so a name can match the opening words of one print and not the other. This site follows the Madani mushaf.

How long does it take to read one juz?

Most fluent readers finish a juz in 30 to 45 minutes when reciting at a steady pace; slower, careful recitation with Tajweed takes longer. Splitting it after each prayer — about a quarter (rub‘) each time — keeps the daily amount manageable.
