Rabbi Zidni Ilma: The Quranic Dua for Knowledge
Among the many duas in the Quran, one is especially loved by students: رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا — Rabbi zidni ‘ilma — "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
Where it appears
It comes at the end of Quran 20:114, in Surah Taha, where the Prophet ﷺ is told not to hasten with the recitation of the Quran, and to say:
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge." (Sahih International)
It's striking that the Prophet ﷺ — the most knowledgeable of people — was instructed to ask for more.
When to say it
- Before a Quran lesson.
- Before homework or revision.
- Before exams.
- Whenever you learn something new.
Teaching it to children
It's short and easy to memorize, making it a perfect first dua for children starting school or Quran classes. Some families say it together every morning before the school run.

In Islam, knowledge is valued when it leads to action and closeness to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027).
