Where to Start With Tafseer: A Beginner's Guide
Reading a translation tells you what the Quran says. Tafseer (تفسير) explains why: the context of revelation, the meaning of words, how verses connect, and how scholars have understood them.
Start with what you already recite
The best place to begin is with the surahs you pray with: Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi and the short surahs of Juz ‘Amma. Understanding them transforms your salah immediately.
Know the context
Knowing whether a surah is Meccan or Medinan — and what was happening at the time — is the first step in tafseer.
Classical works available in English
- Tafsir Ibn Kathir — a classical, hadith-based tafseer, widely available in abridged English translation.
- Ma‘ariful Qur'an by Mufti Muhammad Shafi — a detailed commentary with an English translation.
Start with one surah at a time rather than reading cover to cover.
A simple study method
- Read the surah in Arabic.
- Read the translation on our Quran pages.

- Recite the surah again with that meaning in mind.
