Juz ‘Amma: A Guide to the 30th Part of the Quran

September 24, 20262 min readBy Nouf Quran Academy

Juz ‘Amma (جزء عمّ) is the 30th and final part of the Quran. It's named after its first word, ‘amma ("about what"), which opens Surah An-Naba.

What it contains

Juz ‘Amma contains 37 surahs, from An-Naba (78) to An-Nas (114). Most are short, rhythmic surahs revealed in Makkah, focusing on:

  • the Day of Judgement and the Hereafter;
  • the signs of Allah in creation;
  • the oneness of Allah;
  • stories of past nations.

See Meccan and Medinan surahs.

Why most people start here

  • The surahs are short, so children and adults get quick wins.
  • They're recited in daily prayers.
  • Many are learned first by children: Al-Fatiha (not in Juz ‘Amma, but always first), Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas.

A suggested order

Most students memorize Juz ‘Amma backwards, from An-Nas towards An-Naba, because surahs get longer as you go. Our list of short surahs to memorize first gives an easy starting order.

How long does it take?

With 10–15 minutes of memorization a day plus revision, many adults complete Juz ‘Amma in 6–12 months; children vary more. Tips: how to memorize the Quran.
