Surah Al-Mulk: Meaning, Lessons and a Nightly Habit

Surah Al-Mulk ("The Sovereignty") is the 67th surah, with 30 verses revealed in Makkah. It opens the 29th juz and is a favourite for memorization.

How it begins

"Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent. [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving." (Quran 67:1–2)

• Life is a test — not of who does the most, but who does best.
• Look at creation: the flawless heavens, layered one above another.
• Accountability: the regret of those who ignored the warnings.
• Dependence on Allah: the birds held up in the sky, the provision He sends.

Its reported virtue

A narration reported by at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud, graded sound (hasan) by many scholars, describes a surah of thirty verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven — understood to be Surah Al-Mulk. Many Muslims recite it every night before sleep.

Making it a nightly habit

• Weeks 1–3: memorize verses 1–10.
• Weeks 4–6: verses 11–20.
• Weeks 7–9: verses 21–30.
• After that, recite it every night — revision and worship in one.
