What Is an Ijazah in Quran Recitation?
When looking for a Quran teacher, you may see "ijazah holder" listed as a qualification. It's one of the most meaningful credentials in Quranic education.
What an ijazah is
An ijazah (إجازة) is a licence given by a qualified teacher confirming that a student has recited to them correctly and is authorised to recite and teach. In Quran recitation, it comes with a sanad — a chain of teachers going back, generation by generation, to the Prophet ﷺ.
How it's earned
Typically, the student recites the entire Quran from memory or from the mushaf, in a specific recitation (most commonly Hafs ‘an ‘Asim), to a teacher who holds an ijazah. The teacher listens carefully to every letter and rule. This can take months or years.
Types of ijazah
- Recitation ijazah: for reciting the whole Quran correctly.
- Memorization-based: recited entirely from memory.
- In specific texts: such as classical Tajweed poems like the Jazariyyah.
- In multiple qira'at: for advanced students.
Why it matters
An ijazah shows that a teacher's recitation has been checked in full by a qualified authority. It is not the only sign of a good teacher — patience, teaching skill and experience with children matter too — but it's strong evidence of accuracy.
