The Last Two Verses of Surah Al-Baqarah: Meaning and Virtue

Surah Al-Baqarah ends with two verses that combine a declaration of faith with one of the most comprehensive duas in the Quran.

Verse 285: a declaration of faith

"The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination." (Quran 2:285)

Verse 286: a dua for every believer

It begins with a promise — "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity" — and continues with a series of requests: not to be blamed for forgetting or mistakes, not to be given burdens beyond our strength, and for pardon, forgiveness and mercy. The virtue of reciting them at night

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If somebody recited the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqara at night, that will be sufficient for him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009)

Make it part of your evening

Many Muslims recite these two verses every night after Isha or before sleep, alongside Ayat al-Kursi.

Memorizing them

Together they're about half a page. Learn verse 285 in a week and verse 286 over the next two, then recite them nightly. Pay attention to the long madds and the repeated "Rabbana".
