Never Too Old: Grandparents Learning to Read the Quran

September 24, 20262 min readBy Nouf Quran Academy

Some of our most inspiring students are grandparents. They grew up without access to a teacher, raised families, worked hard — and now, finally, want to read the Quran themselves. It is never too late.

Common worries — and the truth

  • "My memory isn't what it was." Short daily practice builds memory at any age.
  • "I'll be embarrassed." One-to-one lessons are private; no one else is listening.
  • "I can't use technology." A family member can set up the video call once; after that it's one click.

A gentle pace

Older learners often prefer two or three 20–30 minute lessons a week. The Noorani Qaida teaches letters and sounds step by step, and large-print mushafs make reading easier on the eyes. See choosing a mushaf.

Learning in your preferred language

Many grandparents in the UK, USA and Europe are more comfortable in Urdu, Arabic or another language than in English. Ask for a teacher who can explain in your language — see English, Urdu or Arabic?.

Learning alongside grandchildren

Some families book lessons for a grandparent and grandchild back to back — or even together. Children love seeing their elders learn, and it becomes a shared family project.

The reward of effort

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites the Quran with difficulty receives a double reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 4937).
